There’s a rule made popular (for people wanting to master something) by Malcolm Gladwell and his book Outliers called “The 10,000 hour rule.”

Here’s the gist:

“Based on research suggesting that practice is the essence of genius, best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell popularized the idea that 10,000 hours of appropriately guided practice was “the magic number of greatness,” regardless of a person’s natural aptitude. With enough practice, he claimed in his book Outliers, anyone could achieve a level of proficiency that would rival that of a professional. It was just a matter of putting in the time.”

Bad news is this…

…that’s a lot of hours, and chances are you don’t have the time.

So you probably aren’t going RIVAL a professional piano player who has spent most of their life playing. Neither am I.

That’s just the way it is.

But here’s the good news.

You need a few hours to be a really good mediocre piano player.

You can break it down like this.

In order to play with both hands you need about 5 hours.

15 minutes/day, 5 days a week, for 30 days.

To have it start sounding really smooth you need about another 5 hours.

And to start really going off on your own you need maybe 10 hours more.

Thats it.

In 90 days you will become a seriously “okay” piano player.

Will you rival a professional? No.

Will you love it? Yes.

And just think, if you practiced 15 minutes a day, for 1 year, 65 hours worth…

…others who saw and heard you play would think you were flipping awesome and had been playing all your life.

It’s happens everyday around here.

Listen to what Derek from across the pond has to say:
